    Early Life and Education

    Joel McHale was born in Rome, Italy, to American father Jack and Canadian mother Laurie.

    The McHale family returned to Seattle after Jack's work assignment in Italy. Joel attended the University of Washington, earning a bachelor's degree in history in 1995. An avid athlete, McHale participated in rowing and football during his undergraduate years.

    He later pursued a Master of Fine Arts degree in professional acting at the University of Washington.
