Biography of Edward Sapir
Edward Sapir was an American linguist and anthropologist, born on January 26, 1884 in Lauenburg, Germany, in Pomerania.
He was brought to the United States at the age of 5. Sapir studied linguistics and anthropology under Franz Boas at Columbia University, where he obtained his doctoral degree in 1909.
Early Career
During his time as a research associate at the University of California (1907-1908), Sapir focused on describing several Native American languages of the western United States, such as Yana, Takelma, and Wishram.
He applied rigorous methods of analysis, similar to those used in the study of Indo-European and Semitic languages. After a brief period at the University of Pennsylvania, Sapir served as the head of anthrop
